The National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Authority (NPRA) has issued a notification to all Indian states and the District of Punjab that it has decided to suspend the sale of the medication to the public after a complaint was filed in the state's court against a pharma company in a case under the Medicines Act. The state has filed an application under the Medicines Act to prohibit the sale of the drug. NPRA's complaint states that the applicant had paid for the medication through its manufacturer, Pfizer Inc, which is based in Maharashtra. The applicant had notified Pfizer of the complaint but had not received any response. Pfizer's official website is set to display the notification on Friday, November 28.
Pfizer is not the first drug company to be banned by the NPRA in Punjab. In 2009, a Delhi court case in favour of Pfizer, following a case in the Supreme Court in 2010, which decided that the drug's manufacturer, Dr Reddy's Laboratories, had violated the Medicines Act by not providing information to the consumer.
